One of the topics I write about fairly consistently is ethnicity (in the true sense of the term), ethnogenesis, and the impact these have on Western societies. Especially in the American case, ethnogenesis has been an ongoing process that has helped to differentiate Americans from their European forebearers. Indeed, as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, ethnogenesis has actually created two White ethnies occupying the territory of the United States, ethnies which are mutually and increasingly antagonistic. In this post, I’d like to go beyond merely reiterating the existence of that ethnogenesis and discuss some of the consequences of it.
One of the truisms of life that you can take to the bank is that diversity plus proximity equals trouble. This is true whether you personally like it or not. This applies to racial diversity, this applies to linguistic diversity, this applies (as it does here) to ethnic diversity. This division is, in fact, exactly what God intended when He split mankind up at Babel. Even if you don’t accept the Bible as authoritative, there are still several thousand years of human history that attests to the truth that things work best when there’s a place for everyone and everyone stays in their place.
So recently on Twitter, a podcaster named Dan Carlin attempted to calm the waters with this perhaps well-meaning but ultimately fruitless tweet below,
Look, I understand the sentiment. If the population of the United States were united in heart and mind - had high social cohesion - this would be a thousand times better than what we’re seeing now. Obviously. But the fact is that this is not only not the case but is not going to be the case for the foreseeable future. Supposing some national unity that transcends the ethnic divide in America is a pipe dream.
You might have noticed that I keep referring to this divide as an ethnic one. This goes back to the original sense of the term ethnos in Greek which describes a group of people bound together by a common culture, language, mores, taboos, and all the rest. THAT is the division that we currently see in the White majority in America - two increasingly different ethnies who may have a common descent from the original founding stock of this nation (though even in this, we can see origins from different groups among the original settlers that still largely play out today). Hence, Red America and Blue America (for this is who I’m talking about) are two different ethnic groups according to this original sense, and it is a sociocultural division between these two tribes that is really driving the disunity in America today.
“But but but the differences we see are political!” you might be tempted to argue, “If we could just convince the other side to vote the right way, unity would be restored!” Awwww, your naivete is cute in a way. But no, politics isn’t the cause of this divide, it’s merely a symptom of a much deeper, more abiding cultural divide that exists and has existed in a discernible fashion since the first half of the 19th century. And the thing about a culture is that it is DEEPLY ingrained into the group of people sharing it - things like ethnic foods, clothing, and so forth are just the surface - and are usually the only parts of a culture than an outsider can really hope to grasp. Here in America, the primary ethnic divide is between the Red and Blue tribes, the Right and the Left - and each of these don’t merely vote differently from each other, but do so because of endogenously shared social, cultural, and moral assumptions that are almost always not accessible to people across the divide. Those things are why they vote differently. All the other ethnic groups - the blacks, the Latinos, the other immigrants - are all merely picking the side they think will give them the most patronage but are actually irrelevant to the real ethnic rivalry.
What folks need to understand is that there simply is no possibility of a rapprochement with the Left. Further, the fault for this lies with the Left. Remember - the broader Right in America is basically made up of people who, all other things being equal, simply want to be left alone to live their lives, but don’t want people grooming their kids or disarming them in the face of criminals inside and outside of government.
The Left, however, really, really, REALLY badly wants power over everyone else, to run their lives, to make them fulfill the Puritanesque utopian fantasies that drive progressivism’s permanent leftward revolution. Left-wingers really are a fundamentally different group of people than we are, and their culture is one that is driven by the imperialistic desire to absorb, assimilate, or if necessary, eliminate dissenters. To think there can be some kind of “national unity” with them is wishful thinking at its most dangerous. If he were still alive, you could ask Cayler Ellingson, an 18-year-old kid who was murdered by a left-wing domestic terrorist in North Dakota because of politics.
There’s been a lot of talk about “national divorce” in recent months. There’s a reason for this. More and more people of all persuasions are starting to understand that the differences between Red and Blue in America are irreconcilable and that, as unthinkable as it might have been even ten years ago, a parting of ways might be best for all involved. Of course, along with the idea of national divorce there has been a lot of talk about a coming civil war, one that would likely be bloodier and messier than the first one we had. There is absolutely no reason why this would need to happen. The two concepts do not have to be coupled together the way they often are.
Yet, a civil war would be the most likely outcome of, say, one or several states attempting to depart from the union - and the reason is (again) entirely due to the Left. After all, progressivism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, might be doing something they disagree with. So if some Red states decided to strike out on their own, it is almost assured that Blue America would attempt to use force to keep them in. After all, it’s not enough for the Blue tribe to ban guns or kill babies or mutilate children via transgenderism in their own states - you have to be forced to allow these things in your states too. And if you won’t, well, that’s what the military and the alphabet agencies are for. I’ve said it before and I will say it again - there will be some kind of decentralisation that takes place as our collapse phase reaches its end, and if the result of that decentralisation is some kind of armed civil strife on the North American continent, it will have been initiated by the progressive Left Blue tribe.
But the thing is, if there ever were to be some kind of a return to the sort of constitutionally circumscribed, whiggish type of self-governing schema such as we had in the early republic, it’s going to have to be done by Red tribe - and only by Red tribe. Blue tribers simply are not capable of genuine self-government because self-government requires personal restraint and is generally derived from “conservative” Christianity. Yet, everything about Blue tribe’s culture and politics - from the babykilling to the coddling of criminals to the fantasies about “changing genders” and all the rest - basically exist due to the desire to throw off all restraints, including that of self-control. These people simply are not capable of living under a genuine self-governing regime that depends on you not doxxing, harassing, or turning in your neighbours for not agreeing with the Regime.
And despite the national mythology, America is not a propositional state defined by a set of verbal premises that anybody and everybody can adopt without distorting or destroying them. Basically, the ethnos which still carries with it some semblance of the cultural and moral assumptions that existed in the Republic’s early days may be able to replicate it more or less. Neither Blue tribe nor their foreign janissaries will be able to do so.
Ultimately, I don’t care if the lefties look like me, they are not my people. As far as I am concerned, Blue tribers are foreigners, cultural aliens who should exist in a separate polity from me and mine. They can do their thing and we can do ours. I fully realise that this isn’t something they are likely to voluntarily allow. Even if it does take place peacefully there will be a lot of dislocation involved. However, serious thinkers should consider that in the long term it may be preferable to the alternatives.
FWIW I recently found your substack - it's been a pleasure working through your writings!
I don't understand why people talk of civil war. Where could you have battle lines? Red and blue areas are so interspersed that the likely outcome is a return to the guerilla war tactics of the 60s/70s but on steroids.
Regarding your main point, if what is happening with the majority of supporters of the left is akin to a "mass formation", perhaps it can be broken, resulting in enough citizens moving far enough to the right to recreate a stable ethnos.
